- There are a few odd fatwa saying that Imsak is bid’ah (sect).
- Imsak was a time when, we are alert to refrain from eating and drinking and things that invalidate the fast before dawn.
- Imsak usually is 10 minutes before dawn.
- Imsak is derived from the word “mesk,” which means to hold something, embrace it tightly or refrain from it.
- The term imsak means restraint from prohibited things during the daylight hours of Ramadan, when Muslims fast.
- It refers to the time when fasting begins.
- The Prophet Muhammad said prohibitions of fasting begin at the time when the darkness of the night and the light of day can be distinguished.
- He also recommended fasters to eat suhoor (pre-dawn meal) close to imsak time so that fasting is not a burden on the body.
- If a person is doubtful whether imsak time has begun, he should refrain from eating or drinking if he intends to fast that day.
- With the arrival of imsak, one can pray fajr (the dawn prayer).
