Covid-19 & Illegal Immigrants: Documentary defaming Malaysia

On July 3, 2020, Al Jazeera through segment 101 East published a 26-minute short documentary (by Drew Ambrose and Jenni Henderseon) on how Malaysia treated illegal immigrants while Covid-19 was in critical condition (within the MCO).

Hidden away in the COVID-19 pandemic are Malaysia’s migrant workers. For years, they have done the country’s most dangerous, dirtiest jobs. Now, undocumented foreign workers are scared for their future. Out of work and forced to live in cramped conditions, some are starving and dependent on charities to survive.

On the whole, it was found that the documentary dealt with distortions of facts and misleading descriptions of Malaysia as a racist and abusive country against illegal immigrants - treating them (illegal immigrants) like animals, letting go of hunger and so on. 

Iskandar Zulkarnain, who was directly involved in the screening of the MCO and dealt with illegal immigrants, responded to the documentary. For example, Malaysia has incurred high costs of conducting ‘swab tests’, providing food assistance and so on.

The documentary cites a statement by Senior Security Minister Ismail Sabri who offered an offer to illegal immigrants to voluntarily undergo Covid-19 screening, and will not be arrested. Then, the documentary further alleged that illegal immigrants felt betrayed by his promise when the government conducted their detention operation. Actually, none appeared voluntarily during the offer, until the minister announced the offer period ends.

The issue is that those detained are illegally entering the country, have no legal documents and have been infected with Covid-19. In fact, hundreds of positive people are treated well. I do not know which country in the world treats illegal immigrants like their own people. 

The documentary is also the same line with PH and NGO liberalism-rights leaders in early May to oppose the government’s efforts to eradicate illegal immigrants with the “Migrant Also Human” campaign.
